Our Instructor

Kapeka Iokia

I am of native Hawaiian descent, born and raised in Hawai'i to a family immersed in Hawaiian music and dance. I began my formal hula training at the age of 3 that ended at age 17. My professional performance career began at age 18 and spanned 12 years. Companies that I have worked for professionally - Paradise Cove Luau (Hawai'i), Tokyo Disneyland (Japan), Walt Disney World (Florida), Magic of Polynesia (Hawai'i), and various conventions, public and private events in a variety of locations. Following my 12 year professional career I began teaching basic dance foundations in hula to children and adults while continuing to perform at various private events.

Welcome to Hula and Tahitian Dance

Each session will be split into 2 parts. Classes will build throughout the weeks and progress toward the ability to dance and perform beginner level hula dances and Tahitian solo dances.

Part 1 - will teach the basic foundations of Hula, the cultural dance form from the islands of Hawaii. Focus will be on proper body position and posture, feet movements and hand gestures in Hula.

Part 2 - will introduce basic hip movements from the island of Tahiti, and include proper body position and posture while executing movements.

Suggested Clothing:

Shorts or athletic bottoms and t-shirt, nothing too short or tight for ease of movement. Dances will be done barefooted.

Optional Class Attire

 1. pareo (sarong) - rectangular piece of material that hangs below the knee, and is long enough to be tied at the hip.

2. pa’u skirt - hula practice skirt (nice to have, but can be very expensive, tutorials on how to make one found on youtube, only absolutely necessary for intermediate and advanced students)

Pricing Information:

 $85/resident; $90/ non-resident. Class length is 8 weeks. Wednesdays ONLY @ 5pm
