This is the pipe gallery located directly underneath the filters. These pipes are used to carry the filtered water to the clear well where it is disinfected. Also you can see the big tanks in the middle of the gallery on both sides. The smaller tanks hold sodium hypochlorite and the feed pumps located in front of those tanks regulate the amount of disinfectant used to Chlorinated the water. On the other side, the larger two tanks contain Alum. Alum is a positively charged chemical that is added to the water during the flocculation process. Alum combines with particles in the water causing them to clump together into larger heavier particles that settle out of the water during the sedimentation process. The feed pumps in front of these tanks are also used to regulated the chemical as it pumps into the water.
