SUMMER TOUR SCHEDULE

Day Captains and the posted signs should direct patrons to purchase tour tickets at the Social Hall ticket window. (Between Opera House and Social Hall)

Occasionally there will be a special tour sandwiched in between these two tours. The Day Captain will notify actors in these instances.

9:00 & 10:30 TOURS assemble on plaza by Social Hall. Tour guide should greet patrons and introduce themselves to group. Patrons should receive stickers to indicate they have paid. Tour guide should direct people who come late to ticket window and invite them to join the group.

*As you meet guests, select an outgoing person who would be a fun “defendant” at the court trial.  Write the name on a slip of paper to place on the Judge’s desk when you arrive at the Court House.  TOUR GUIDE will be the bailiff.

9:05 & 10:35 TOUR GUIDE introduces Jacob Hamblin. He will have 12 minutes.  Please give actors a two-minute warning by holding up two fingers when only two minutes remain for their allotted time schedule at each location. It is important to keep within the time frame.

9:17 & 10:47 TOUR GUIDE thanks Jacob and invites patrons to pass by the adobe house reroute to the Opera House. Do not stop at locations that are not part of the tour or to tell stories. Stories can be told as you are walking or riding on the bus.

9:22 & 10:52 TOUR GUIDE introduces Orson Pratt upstairs in the Opera House.  He will have 12 minutes.

9:34  & 11:04 TOUR GUIDE thanks Orson Pratt and invites group to follow her/him downstairs where they explain something about the Opera House. Theater performances began the first year pioneers came. They were performed in the Bowery first, later in the St. George Hall, and even in the Tabernacle basement. The Opera House was built in stages, 1875 built on top of winery, 1880 expanded to add the large room above. Tell about the sloping floor and show how the floor was lowered and raised. Mention the Gardener*s Club who built the winery to store wine. Show three kinds of stone in the winery — lava foundation, sandstone walls, adobe interior. Exit through the lower door to board bus.

9:45 &11:15 TOUR GUIDE board buses to Tabernacle. En route TOUR GUIDE (or bus driver if NO tour guide on bus) may point out: City Plaza — Ancestor Square — art gallery, restaurants, old jail, Sheriff Hardys House - site of Erastus Snows home on Main Street where Zions Bank now stands. If you run out of time point these sights out on your way to the courthouse after leaving the Tabernacle. As you travel down Main Street point out that they can find quilts, tee shirts, snacks & drinks, malts, jewelry, art — this was the first commercial center. Bishops Storehouse — show building, tell about tithing scrip.

When you leave bus to enter Tabernacle show the markings on the stones. These represent "signatures" of about 8 or 9 stonemasons.

9:55 & 11:25 TOUR GUIDE introduces Erastus Snow.  He will have 12 minutes.

10:07 & 11:37 TOUR GUIDE thanks Erastus Snow and boards buses. Point out Judds Store, the town mercantile — can return later for a malt or just to look inside. Also point out Orson Pratts home as bus slows and remind group they met Orson in the Opera House. Tell the "green gate" story. Remember to point out any buildings you didnt have time to mention on your way to the Tabernacle. You will pass the Woodward School and the St. George Stake Academy (now the St. George Art Center).

10:17 & 11:47 TOUR GUIDE leads group to courtroom where GUIDE writes the name of the person ("defendant") participating on the pad on the Judges desk. (Tour guide has previously obtained the name of someone in the group who will be "prosecuted".) The TOUR GUIDE acts as bailiff and announces the Judge:

"All arise (Judge Macfarlane enters) "Court is now in session, the Honorable Judge John Menzies Macfarlane, probate judge for Washington County, presiding. You may be seated." (This statement can be found on a card on the Judges desk — please leave it there for the next tour)

10:30 & 12:00 TOUR GUIDE boards bus - point out the gallows in the cupola on top of the courthouse as the bus leaves. Mention that Judge Macfarlane wrote one of two or three traditional Christmas Carols written in the U.S. — "Far, Far Away on Judeas Plains" (If the judge does not mention it). Share any other fun story you have time for as the bus goes to the last stop - possibly the story of the miners who hung the man who shot their paymaster in Silver Reef.

10:40 & 12:00 TOUR GUIDE, upon arriving at Brigham Young Home, assembles group from the buses, expresses pleasure in having served as their tour guide and thanks them for taking the tour.  Tell them you will leave them after introducing them to Brigham Young.  Explain that after meeting Brigham Young the tour is ended. They may then leave or tour Brigham Youngs home as they choose. Encourage them to tour the home. Explain that they will return by foot to their cars. Remind them to be sure they have removed all articles from the bus.

10:45 12:15 — TOUR GUIDE introduces Brigham Young. If you wish to return with the bus driver ask him to please wait for you.
