October will be a big month in St. George—big mainly because the redesigned town square is to be completed and dedicated. People have been watching the reworking of the plaza area for many months. The big open space is between the four sandstone buildings—the St. George Tabernacle, the Woodward School, the new Library and the Community Arts Building (the old Dixie College).

Just a few days after the dedication on Wednesday 24 October the St. George Book Festival will begin at 7 p.m. in the St. George Tabernacle. Each evening, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, there will also be major events. On Saturday morning and through much of the day there will be multiple sessions held at the Community Arts Center, the St. George Library, the Woodward School and the Washington District School Office. All are on the town square and all events are free and open to the public.

Last year 1500 people attended at least one session of the festival. This year there will be more offerings than last year. The Utah Humanities Council, the Utah Arts Council and the City of St. George are sponsors and invite everyone of all ages, including children and teenagers, to come. There are special sessions for the youth.

Last year was the first time for the St. George Book Festival. It was so successful that a second festival will be held this year in October. The festival will be part of the great celebration welcoming the city’s new Town Square. For many months citizens have watched the reworking of the area between the St. Gorge Tabernacle, the Woodward School, the new Library and the Community Arts Building. That huge open space is now transformed, with a tower, a fountain, an amphitheater and great lawns. It is ready for community events.

The St. George Book Festival will utilize all four buildings and the open spaces and even the nearby School District Office between Wednesday October 24 and Saturday October 27. In the evenings will be the headliners and on Saturday there will be sessions at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. with a bonus at 2 p.m. In addition to speakers and authors discussing books there will be book vendors, musicians and food providers on the plaza much of the day. It will be a huge event.

The sponsors—Utah Humanities Council, Utah Arts Council and St. George City—have provided the funding and invite everyone to come. The events are all free and open to the public; they include activities appropriate for all ages including children and teenagers.

This October will bring back the St. George Book Festival. It was begun last year and was so successful that it is being held again this year. It will be October 24 through 27 in the buildings surrounding the town square. Everyone has been watching the redesign and finishing of the town square. The St. George Book Festival will celebrate that completion just a few days after the dedication.

Each evening, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday there will be headline events (listed below). On Saturday there will be multiple sessions at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and a bonus at 2 p.m. These will be held in the Community Arts Building, the new Library, the Woodward School and the Washington County School District Office, all surrounding the town square.

There will be authors and commentators and demonstrations and even a rare book appraiser. Book vendors, food options and musicians will be on the plaza much of the day. All sessions are free and open to the public and there are presentations appropriate for children and teenagers. The sponsors of this event are the Utah Humanities Council, the Utah Arts Council and the City of St. George.
