Streets Division
The Streets Division is responsible for maintenance of pubic streets, drainage ways and associated services. The Crews maintain over 1,500 lane miles of roadway and 154 miles of storm drain. The Division has 32 employees and an annual budget of approximately $5,000,000. Services include: asphalt repair; pavement sealing; striping; signing; traffic signals; weed abatement; flood control; storm drain installation, repair and cleaning; sweeping; concrete construction and repair and operation of the Reuse Center.
These professional employees are required to hold many certifications for performance of their jobs. All Streets Division members are required to be certificated in Construction, Signing and Flagging, hold First Aid and CPR certification and Heavy Equipment Operations certification through the Utah LTAP Center as well as the specialized training listed below.
The Traffic Crew operates and maintains nearly 30 traffic signals and over 7,500 signs. The division has its own sign shop where it produces over 500 signs per year. Streets throughout the city are striped twice a year by this crew.
Each crew member is required to hold a Class “A” CDL License with a tanker endorsement, Pavement Marking Technician Certification, Traffic Signal Certification, levels I and II.
The Asphalt Crew uses approximately 370 tons of asphalt per year to effect road repairs and seals 40 lane miles of pavement with a chip-seal application.
Each crew member is required to hold a Class “A” CDL license with a tanker and hazardous materials endorsements and Basic Asphalt and Proper Patching certification from the Utah LTAP Center
The Concrete Crew performs small structural construction and maintenance. They repair over 6,000 square feet of hazardous sidewalk annually and construct drainage boxes, curb and gutter etc.
Each crew member is required to hold a Class “A” CDL license with a tanker endorsement, American Concrete Institute certification and Commercial Herbicide certification.
The city saves nearly $100,000 per year with its Reuse Center operation. The Streets Division has to dispose of nearly 10,000 tons of asphalt and concrete rubble every year. Rather than hauling it to the landfill and paying to dispose of it, the division crushes the material into road base and reuses it for construction and maintenance purposes. Approximately 6,000 tons of green waste is also collected every year and composted in cooperation with the Washington County Solid Waste District. Over 400 tons of compost is sold at the Reuse Center annually.
The Division also has a roadside crew that maintains roadway shoulders and drainage ways. They install approximately 1,500 feet of storm drain pipe annually. They also provide maintenance of the storm drain system including open channels and riverways. They are currently engaged in a coordinated effort to eradicate 1,500 acres of tamarisk trees from the city’s open space. These species are choking up drainage ways and creating fire hazards. This project is about 50% complete.
Each crew member is required to hold a Class “A” CDL license with a tanker endorsement, Commercial Herbicide certification and OSHA Trenching and Shoring certification.
