Public Works Flood Information
Flood
Hazard Areas
Maps showing the location of the 100-year floodplain and assistance in reading
and interpreting these maps are available at the City Engineer's Office.
Floodplain information is also available the Washington County Public Library.
The 100-year floodplain is the area that has a 1% chance of being flooded
in any given year, or a 25% chance of being flooded over the life of a 30-year
mortgage. St. George is subject to dangerous flash flooding during periods
of heavy precipitation and as a result of winter snow melt. Flash flood
hazards include fast-moving waters often accompanied by logs and other debris.
Flash floods can occur within minutes. Be prepared to evacuate the flood
hazard area quickly.
Flood Safety
1. Know flood warning procedures.
2. Plan escape routes to high ground.
3. During times of heavy rainfall, monitor the level of water in the drainage
way and stay tuned to radio or TV for possible flood warnings.
4. Evacuate the flood hazard area in times of impending flood or when advised
to do so by the police or fire department.
5. Do not attempt to cross a flooded stream on foot or by car.
6. If your car stalls in high water, abandon it immediately and seek higher
ground.
7. Keep children away from flood waters, ditches, culverts and storm drains.
8. Be especially cautious at night.
Flood Insurance
Your homeowners insurance policy will not cover losses due to flooding.
St. George City participates in the National Flood Insurance Program which
makes flood insurance available to everyone in the city. Information about
this flood insurance can be obtained from your insurance agent. You do not
have to live in the floodplain to qualify for this flood insurance. Property
owners can insure their buildings and contents and renters can insure their
possessions. There is a 30-day waiting period before a flood insurance policy
takes effect (five-day for new construction), so you should call your insurance
agent now.
Remember, just because your home has not flooded in the recent past, does
not mean that you are safe. For many people, their home and its contents
represent their greatest investment. We strongly urge you to buy flood insurance
to protect yourself from devastating losses due to flooding.
Property Protection Measures
The City Engineer's Office and the Reference Department of the Washington
County Library has information about emergency measures which you can take
to protect your home and property. Steps necessary to retrofit a house are
explained along with emergency measures to minimize damage, such as moving
furniture and sandbagging.
Floodplain Development Permits
All development in the floodplain and not just construction of buildings
requires the review and approval of the St. George City Engineer. In most
cases a floodplain development permit must be applied for and issued prior
to commencement of any development in the established floodplain. Application
must be made to the St. George City Engineer prior to building, filling
or otherwise developing property in the floodplain.
Drainage System Maintenance
The City provides maintenance of the existing drainage channels to clear
obstructions which would prevent flood water free passage downstream. Illegal
dumping into the rivers is one of the problems associated with channel obstruction.
Violations regarding illegal dumping of materials or natural hazards in
the existing drainage channels should be reported to the City Engineer.
If you have questions, concerns, need a Floodplain Development Permit or
would like to report illegal dumping activities or other hazards, please
call the City of St. George City Engineer's Office 175 East 200 North St.
