Fleet Division
The Fleet Division is unique in that they are the only division in the city whose customers are strictly other city departments and divisions. It is their responsibility to keep over 800 pieces of city equipment maintained and running in the most efficient and cost effective manner.
During a typical year, the Fleet Division will complete 1,600 preventative maintenance work orders, 25,000 fueling fill ups (560,800 gallons of fuel), 3,500 work orders and 7,500 repairs. The parts shop carries approximately $52,000 in parts.
City of St. George Fleet Mechanics are ASE Certified and the shop has been granted Blue Seal Certification, a coveted honor awarded to only 10% of fleets in the nation.
The Fleet Division takes the charge to maintain city equipment in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible, very seriously. The follow are some of the ways they have found to cut costs:
- Fuel Pricing - In 2001 the city changed the way it bought fuel by getting weekly bids from six different refineries. Fuel is purchased at the most inexpensive source in that given week. This has resulted in a savings of over $1,000,000 to date.
- Upfitting Police Vehicles – In 2000 the Fleet Division took over the responsibility of upfitting the city’s police vehicles rather than hiring the work out. Since that time they have upfit 117 police vehicles resulting in a savings of $257,000.
- Certified Warranty Dealer – The Fleet Division is a warranty dealer for G.M., Ford, Chrysler and eight other equipment manufacturers. This has resulted in a cost savings of over $107,000 this year.
- SunTran Bus Mechanics – In 2000, the City of St. George began offering a fixed route bus system known as SunTran. Maintaining equipment such as buses that is in use 10 hours every day is very expensive. Two mechanics in the Fleet Division have been certified as bus mechanics eliminating the need to take the buses to outside entities. This has resulted in cost savings as well a time savings to keep SunTran running smoothly.
