June 2, 2008 - Police to start Crosswalk Enforcement Campaign
Contact: Sgt. Albert Gilman Phone: (435)627-4301 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 02JUN08 POLICE TO START CROSSWALK ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN On Friday June 6, 2008 between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. the St. George Police Department will kick off an enforcement campaign targeting pedestrian safety relating to crosswalks. In 2006 there were 50 reported auto pedestrian accidents in St. George, two of which were fatalities. In 2007 there were 46 reported accidents and fortunately no fatalities for that year.
The purpose of this pedestrian enforcement program is to target unaware and discourteous drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks. The officers involved in the enforcement will use this opportunity to educate the driving public about pedestrian rights of way, and related traffic laws. The department also plans to develop statistical data to target problem areas that may require increased enforcement.
The police department will be monitoring driver compliance as police personnel, in plain clothes, cross the roadway in marked crosswalks. The locations; will include crosswalks throughout the city to provide the best outreach of education and statistical information.
