Traffic - Parking Enforcement Increases Safety
There has been an extra effort to give attention to many of the traffic problems that have been increasing in our city. Numerous traffic stops have been made and the result has been a change in the location of crashes that are happening on our streets. The stats are still being compiled, but it looks very promising. The St. George Police Department has recently sent letters out to businesses and people that may be affected by the efforts to address yet another aspect of the traffic problem and that problem is parking. Delivery trucks seem to park wherever is convenient to drop off their goods to a business or residence. Sometimes that area is in the middle of the road. Sometimes it is on the street side of parked vehicles, Some delivery vehicles pull up with one set of tires on the sidewalk. Marc Mortensen, the city Public Information Officer reported that many new grates were broken in this manner by these trucks pulling up onto the sidewalks and parking on St. George Blvd. Some have flashers on, others do not, but they either forget or ignore the fact that parking in such a manner is dangerous and poses traffic problems for other vehicles that use the roadway. Our schools are not very pedestrian friendly when parents drop off or pick up their children. Cars are parking double and children are darting between cars to get to the one that is picking them up, seemingly oblivious to the dangers of cross traffic. The parents are putting their children at risk by doing this as children don’t have the same sense of danger that adults should have. They don’t recognize the risk of running between cars or in front of a school bus. The area cars and the motor squad are watching the school crosswalks closely, stopping violators and issuing citations and warnings as necessary. The officers will be taking a zero tolerance stance when the safety of others comes into play. They will be watching for double parking, parking on the sidewalk, and parking in the center of the road. Vehicles must park parallel with the roadway, with the right side of the vehicle close to the right edge of the roadway. They will also be watching for vehicles that have pulled up onto the sidewalk or within 30 feet of a stop sign, crosswalk or fire hydrant. An exception to parking laws are disabled vehicles. If a vehicle breaks down or gets a flat tire it should be coasted or driven to a nearby parking lot or side street or otherwise off the roadway. If it cannot be moved, then it becomes an exception to the laws. Turn on the flashers and make sure that everyone gets out of the car and off the roadway. Many crashes happen when others rubberneck to see what happened. They invariably strike the stranded vehicle or occupants that are standing beside it. Letters have been sent out to the delivery companies in an effort to promote voluntary compliance. It would be nice if we never had to give a citation or take an accident report and all vehicles parked appropriately, but there will be those who choose to violate the laws of safety and endanger others by their choices. Our officers will be there as well to remind them of better alternatives.
