How to avoid setting yourself up for a crash

* Take things down from the rearview mirror: Having things hanging from your rearview mirror "desensitizes" you to movement in that area of your windshield, similar to a ring that you can no longer feel on your finger. When a child comes from the right and passes through that area, your brain will bypass that movement because it's used to movement in that area. DON'T HAVE THINGS HANGING FROM THE REARVIEW MIRROR.
* When making a left turn: don't turn your wheel to the left to prepare for the turn. If struck from behind, you could be pushed into oncoming traffic!
* When driving out of a parking lot, always go to the far right of the driveway to enter the street. This will set you up so as not to interfere with a car wishing to turn into the same driveway.
* Allow 3 seconds following distance between you and the car in front of you. Start timeing when the car in front of you passes a stationary object such as a pole or a crack in the road or a crosswalk line, then stop timing when your car passes the same point. If you didn't get to "3", back off.
* Always walk behind your vehicle and check the rear before backing. Most children hit or killed at home by vehicles are hit because they were playing behind the backing vehicle and were not seen by the driver.
