State law requires that a driver involved in a crash stop at the scene and exchange insurance, vehicle and driver information. In crashes over $1000 total damage or any injury, the state must be notified. Calling the local police satisfies this requirement. Don't discuss blame. Assist the injured. Call the police. Get out of the road. Make sure information is given to the police, or exchanged with the other driver if the crash is under $1000 and the police are not called. Contact your insurance company. The issuing of a citation DOES NOT necessarily mean that a person has liability, and a person CAN BE liable and not receive a citation, so it is important that you talk with your insurance company for the settlement of the claim. Calling the police after you have left the scene results in an incident that cannot be investigated. Call before you leave the scene of a crash, no matter how small. The police will verify insurance information for you and insure that the proper information is exchanged. |
