Police- Animal Control Officer
Under the direct supervision of the Patrol Division, and answerable to the
assigned sergeant, enforces city and state ordinances regarding control
of animals by apprehending stray, diseased, unlicenced, or annoying dogs,
cats, or other animals. This is routine ordinance enforcement work involving
extensive public contract.
Typical Duties
- Operates department vehicles and patrols general and assigned areas;
picks up and/or impounds vicious, injured, dead, problem and stray animals
from public and private property.
- Contacts owners of animals and informs them of their responsibilities.
Collects fees and issues licenses if necessary.
- Handles collection of dead animals within the city.
- Responds to complaints; determines presence of violations; gives
warnings, issues citations and informs violators, etc. of code violations.
May testify in court; types and submits reports; maintains records;
issues licenses and receives and receipts monies.
- Insures all complaints are given thorough attention; detects and
monitors problem areas.
- Issues citations to animal owners in accordance with city and state
ordinances and regulations.
- Helps to maintain the city animal shelter in a clean condition, furnishes
water and food for animals, maintains grounds surrounding area as needed.
- Provides for disposition of animals by return to owner, sale, or
use of euthanasia techniques.
- Qualified to properly administer tranquilizer techniques to animals
for life capture and for disposal requirements.
- Investigates animal bite complaints of suspected rabies; destroys
animals when required.
- Responsible for the packaging and shipment of animal parts to the
medical lab for testing for rabies and other diseases as required.
- Responsible for proper care and maintenance of vehicles assigned
to Animal Control.
- Assists in educating public of animal control problems and laws.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Knowledge of habits and characteristics of animals and accepted practices
of care and feeding of same.
- Experience in care and handling of animals.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and perform
routine record keeping functions.
- Ability to learn animal control ordinances and maintain good relations
with civic groups and the public.
- Must possess a valid Utah State Driver's License.
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalency.
- Must become and maintain qualification in the use of tranquilizer
techniques and euthanasia methods.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision.
- Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous and calm
manner often under stressful situations.
Working Condtions
Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift
medium weights (50-100 pounds). Difficult working positions. Moderate exposure
to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust,
or grease. Exposure to health and occupational hazards.
Intermittent exposure to stressful situations as result of dealing with
the public and/or unfriendly animals.
