Welcome to our website! I commend you for taking the time to check this out. Our goal is to continually strive for excellence in all we do. I am proud of our department and the service that we provide for the citizens of our community. Because of the great leadership and support throughout our city, we will continue to move forward and meet the many challenges placed before us. We have taken on many challenges in the past and learned valuable lessons along the way. We will take those experiences and prepare for the future.
An excellent quote from Theodore Roosevelt states, “It’s not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man (or woman) who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat, and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms; the great devotions; who spends himself (herself) in worthy causes; who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who, at worst, if he (she) fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his (her) place shall never be with those timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.”
We have many citizens in our community who take the time to get involved and have the courage to be in the “arena” rather than sit back and watch things happen. These individuals have taken our Citizen’s Academy, joined in with the Community Action Teams, Neighborhood Watch, Volunteers in Public Safety, and many other programs where they truly make a difference. Even a phone call to report suspicious activity has led to major arrests and solved cases. We need the help of each citizen. Sir Robert Peel, credited with the first community policing concepts, made the profound statement, “The police are the public, and the public are the police." We are all in this together and we truly appreciate those citizens who make a difference.
The quality of life we enjoy in St. George is a precious commodity and should not be taken for granted. Without constant vigilance, this precious commodity could change overnight. Our officers are committed to doing their duty with courage, respect, and diligence in all they do. We are charged with enforcing the law. We strive for voluntary compliance of the law, but often write citations and make arrests when laws are violated. We also respond to crimes, accidents, tragedies, deaths, lost or missing children, medical emergencies, major investigations, and a whole myriad of circumstances to help those in need.
I’m proud of our officers and the way they take on the daily challenges. They are faced with adversity each and every shift they work. I’ve often seen heroic actions by those who serve this community. The officers have made personal sacrifices that many people will never see. I have observed officers open their own wallet for those less fortunate, give the boots right off their feet for a shoeless man, and take a destitute individual home for a hot meal and hot shower. I have literally seen lives saved by quick thinking and acting officers. I have observed officers defend and protect victims of violent crime. I have heard our dispatchers save lives and stay calm during absolute crisis. It is an honor to be associated with these everyday heroes. One of the finest parts of my job is to associate with such great men and women. You can truly be proud of your Police Department. I hope you take the time to get involved in your community and that you not only expect us to do our best, but put forth your best effort as well. Remember, “The police are the public, and the public are the police.”
