Law Enforcement is a public service. Citizens expect a full accounting from the Police Chief within their jurisdiction. These statistics can be used for many crime prevention and crime suppression activities. The State and Federal Government use these statistics in many publications. These include the Crime in the United States, Hate Crime Statistics, Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, and others.
The City of Saint George reports only offenses that occur within the city limits or jurisdiction. Other agencies report offenses that occur in the County or in other State jurisdictions. Arrests are reported only for offenses that occur within our own jurisdiction. Recovered stolen property is reported only by the agency where it was stolen without regard to which agency recovered it.
It must be said from the beginning that these statistics are not meant for comparison of our city to other cities. Readers should not assume that a lower rate of reported offenses or lower rates of arrest in any given area will make that area “safer” or more desirable than another. Raw statistical data always needs to be tempered with good judgment and common sense.
