St. George PD Bicycle Patrol Unit

The St. George Police Department began using bicycles on patrol in June of 1997. Since its inception the unit has undergone many changes. The size of the unit has fluctuated from only two to six officers to the current eight “man” roster. The philosophy of our bicycle unit however, has never changed. Bicycle patrol officers are chosen for this assignment for their desire and willingness to pro-actively enforce what many people consider “small” things. We believe that enforcing these small quality of life violations is the very essence of the BROKEN WINDOWS policing philosophy. Bicycle Patrol Officers routinely patrol the City’s parks, trails and other public places enforcing city ordinances and maintaining public order. The bicycle as transportation allows an officer to cover ground much more efficiently that if he was on foot yet still keeps him on an intimate level with the community.

The bike unit is also tasked with administering the local CRIME FREE MULTI-UNIT HOUSING PROGRAM. This program is a national program that the SGPD began to incorporate in 1996. The goal of the SGPD in regards to multi-unit hosing is to help ensure a quiet, safe environment, free from crime and disorder that unfortunately plagues many complexes.

The Bicycle Patrol Unit also works closely with the other groups under the Special Enforcement Division. Bike officers routinely patrol school grounds to assist SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS, in their mission to keep their assigned school crime and disorder free. They may also be called upon by the GANG UNIT or the DRUG TASK FORCE to assist them as needed.

The Bicycle Patrol Unit is a versatile, effective law enforcement tool that continues to evolve and adapt to meet the need of the citizens of St. George.
