School Zones, Buses and Zanex
It's that time again. Some breathe a sigh of relief. They have had the kids at home all summer and are looking forward to some free time. Some are more than anxious as they send their precious child off to the first day of school with hopes for a good experience. Some don't have a clue that anything is different until they see the red lights in the rearview mirror and the officer informs them of the school zone a block back. Some get very upset at the herds of kids meandering across the street without regard for traffic. Whatever our viewpoint, it's a fact. The kids are back in school, the bus stops and school zones are in operation and the buses will have their flashing lights going. We have to adapt. This is a critical time and a potentially dangerous time as well. There are some things to be aware of and some steps to take to make these activities safer for all:
- Become aware of the locations in your neighborhood and along the route you take to work of the bus stops and the school crossings. If you want to avoid the bus stop or the school zone, alter your route or leave 5 minutes earlier or later.
! Be prepared to stop when the YELLOW flashing lights are displayed on a school bus. The kids that are late for the bus will see it coming and may begin running across the street from all directions. They can come from anywhere. Look around as you slow down.
- When approaching a school zone, remember that if a child steps off the curb to your left to cross the street, the entire crosswalk shuts down. Cars going both directions are required to stop. This differs from regular crosswalks where only the cars approaching the half of the crosswalk the pedestrian is on is required to stop. In a school zone, when anyone steps off the curb, vehicles going both directions are required to stop.
- Teach your children bus safety. They need to know to look both ways as they get off the bus, as they go in front of the bus to cross the street, as they cross the street to get on the bus. The flashing lights do not mean that it is safe to cross. Teach them to cross at the corners. Teach them to not play around or in the bus when it is in motion on the way to school.
- Have your children walk to school or the bus stop with friends. There is always safety in numbers. If they walk alone, either take them or go with them. Stand at the bus stop with them until there are others there that they can stand with. Be aware of others waiting at bus stops.
We will do our part. The Washington County School District and the St. George Police Department work hand in hand on these issues. They have provided us with school times, bus routes and bus stop locations. We will be monitoring these areas for violations that put our children at risk. The bus drivers will be taking down license plates and filling out violation forms and we will be following up with citations for those who are too busy to stop for the bus when the lights are flashing. The bottom line is safety for us and our children and we thank you for your help.
