Leadership Deputy Chief Russell Peck
While attending the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, I took a great class on leadership that really hammered home some points that help not only in police work, but may also help others who take on the leadership role. We are all leaders in one way or another, whether in our families, our work, community, or otherwise. As police officers in our community, leadership is especially important.
Think about leaders in your life that you admired or looked up to. What traits did they possess that made them effective leaders? The essence of leadership is character which includes integrity and honesty. Leaders throughout history have possessed the ability to make a decision with the courage to follow through with that decision. Making the right decisions is a crucial part of leadership. Leadership is tied to accomplishments. Good outcomes are the result of good leadership. I have a coin from the Utah Chapter of the FBI National Academy. On the back of the coin it reads,"Am I doing the right thing at the right time and the right way and for the right reason?"
Leaders must also have a vision and inspire others to see the vision. They need to look into the future and see what they want to accomplish. Goals must be set and sought after with enthusiasm and energy. There must be a purpose and a resolve to fulfill the purpose. While accomplishing great things, a great leader must also take care of his/her people and support them in their efforts. The leader makes sure they have the tools, supplies, or whatever is needed to accomplish the task. A great leader makes others feel important and criticizes only in private while praising in public.
An important aspect of leadership is that great leaders are also great followers. Poor leaders are poor followers. A great leader gives his superiors the same loyalty and service that he expects from his followers. Leaders must set the example for others to follow. They are life-long learners. They also inspire, promote, and help others develop into great leaders.
There are many types of people in this world. I've always noticed that some people are energy givers and some are energy takers. Have you ever been around someone who constantly whines, criticizes, or has nothing but negativity to spread around. These people spread around their venom like a cancer. I'm sure you have also been around someone who inspires, has a positive attitude, makes others feel important, and you just feel better associating with that person. What type are you? Great leaders maintain a positive attitude and inspire others to give their best, tempering it with discipline when needed.
We can all improve our leadership skills. We can all strive for excellence. I personally have plenty of room for improvement. But, wanting to improve is half the battle. Through adversity we become stronger. There are some great examples right here in our own community of great leaders. We would not have the great community we have without that great leadership.
Let=s continue to help each other improve and reach our full potential as individuals and as a community.
