Follow your Hunches: They're Right
I remember instances with my boys where I was trying to teach them "lessons in life". You know what I mean. Like cleaning up your room and making your bed, mowing and edging the lawn completely and leaving the counter and sink (or any place you happen to be) cleaner or better than you found it. I would refer to these instances as a "lesson in life". Invariably my boys would roll their eyes at yet another "lesson in life."

Well guess what: you can find a lesson in life any place you look. And the best lessons to learn always make you a better person. Not just that you shouldn't have done this or that, but that by doing the right thing, and then developing a habit of doing them, you become a better person and you make the community a better place.

I remember the first time I ever plowed a field. The tractor meandered left and right as it turned the earth and when I was done, it looked like a giant hand had moved the middle of the field slightly to the north and the ends of the field to the south. I was so careful, how did this happen? I concentrated on the front wheel of the tractor so hard, keeping it the exact distance from the previous row I just knew it would be perfect. Dad smiled and then taught me a lesson in life. "You look at a spot on the far end of the field and steer toward that spot. Never take your eyes off it, and the row will be straight as an arrow." And so it is in life: We keep our eyes focused on our long range goals and we will get where we want to be. If we focus on the little things that come up, we will surely get sidetracked.

There is another lesson in life. "Some things are always right, no matter what anyone else says. And some things are always wrong, no matter what anyone else says." Everyone on this earth knows basic right and wrong. Call it your conscience, a little voice or a hunch, but by whatever name, if you follow that inclination, that prompting, that feeling, you will be right about 90% of the time. We make the mistakes when we attempt to rationalize what we are feeling. And why do I bring this up?

Nobody woke up and thought "What am I going to do today? Oh, I think I'll break into a house and rob two people tonight at gun point" or "I think I'll rob a bank today", or "I think I'll break into the house down the street." These situations were all thought of beforehand and the perpetrator staked out the area, cruised the location, scoped out the situation. They are there to be seen. This is where you come in. You need to call us with this "suspicious" information, with the hunch that you have. The guy walking slowly down the street looking in cars, the fellow across from the bus stop or the elementary school watching the kids. You need to write down pertinent information (the car slowly cruising your street) and then call us if you hear of a crime in the area. You need to call if you see someone staking out a potential target, if you hear suspicious sounds, if you see a door ajar or a window broken. Don't rationalize away this hunch. You're right about 90% of the time.
