Fireworks
Police briefings this week will include words similar to these: "Okay, Listen up! Here's the cheat sheet for codes. Make sure you have it with you and familiarize yourself with the laws. The fire department will have people on standby." Why all the hubbub? Fire! The people have fire! Or more correctly, fireworks. And it's hot, we've already had hundreds of firefighters in Washington County helping us with lightning caused outbreaks, and one plane crashed with tragic results. Please be careful this year. Know the laws and watch your children when they are engaged in the celebration activities.

  • You can set off fireworks 3 days before, the day of, and 3 days after the 4th and the 24th of July.
  • Class C fireworks only are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets and the larger rockets are not legal (and you have no control over where they will land or the fires they will cause).
  • Keep a bucket of water handy and put the used fireworks and wires from sparklers into this bucket. This will put out the lingering sparks and prevent burns to little feet running across the grass.
  • Pick up the used fireworks from the roadway so that passing cars will not run over them.
  • Don't throw sparklers, especially off the hills while you are watching the city display. Every year fires are caused and we take reports of people and cars being hit with these and other fireworks. "It's all fun and games til someone loses an eye!"

Many cities are banning fireworks this year because of the hazards their use creates, and it's not the fireworks themselves that cause the problems, it's more about how they are used and abused. We have freedoms only to the point that others are impacted by our actions. And for the few, laws are enacted and ordinances are created to address unsafe situations. Let's make sure that our freedoms aren't limited by their unwise and unsafe use. It all comes down to thinking of those around us.
