Crashes are up, Way up
I get a copy of a consolidated monthly report that spells out the previous month's police activity, including all the burglaries, thefts, and criminal activity that occurs with in the jurisdiction of the St. George Police Department. This report is available to the public at the front desk just for the asking. It also includes the number of crashes in our city. The numbers are alarming, and I feel compelled to share them. Particularly the crash numbers. I call them "crashes" because when we call them "accidents", it carries with it an assumption that these things are beyond our control. After all, it was an "accident". How wrong that is! Take a look at these stats:

(These are through the end of November for each year).

Crashes: Year to date
2001 2002 2003 2004
Fatal 3 0 4 4
Injury 361 353 399 491
Reportable 742 794 951 966
Non Reportable 508 451 412 465
Hit and Run 90 129 120 174
TOTALS 1704 1727 1886 2100

In November we had 199 crashes. From December 1 to the 15th, we=ve responded on 131 crashes in this city! That's 13 a day and only half of the month has gone by!

We also get calls for traffic enforcement at this or that location, usually along with a statement such as"is it going to take someone getting killed before the police do something about this?"

This consolidated monthly report also includes the enforcement numbers. Take a close look at these numbers also:

Traffic Enforcement: Year to date
2001 2002 2003 2004
Moving citations 6138 6608 7026 7451
Non-moving citations 7054 7443 7543 9713
Parking violations 2236 2521 2264 2106
TOTALS 15,600 16,572 16,833 19,270

We are out there. We are giving citations for those violations that we can get to. Many intersections are very hard to monitor due to the lack of access to the violators (such as Bluff and Blvd, Bluff and Main, 1000 E Blvd), so we team up with a spotter to call out the violators to waiting patrol officers in cars and on motorcycles. But now I have to ask the same question that the police often hear: "Is it going to take someone getting killed before some of you decide to help the police do something about this?" We've got to work together to address this problem. We need to continue to enforce the law on those who just won't change their habits for any other reason. And the rest of us need to evaluate our driving habits and MAKE A CHANGE NOW! We HAVE to be more alert. We HAVE to slow down, to back off, to leave 5 minutes earlier and to be more patient. We are all in this together. This is a community problem that we can and must solve. We all need to be a part of the solution. Start today. Tomorrow will be too late for 13 more of you.
