In recent articles we have been asking for your help and for your
involvement to make this community safer. We have been having community
meetings on Neighborhood Watch, Mobile Watch and CERT. We have been
writing articles on how to improve safety on our streets, in and around
our homes, and at work. To further promote this effort, we have been
making some changes in our website. Keep in mind that I am one who has
to ask 5 or 6 times how to work specific functions on my computer. I am
currently on a “tolerance level” with mine. I like the typewriter. When
I went to school, we had a math class on how to use a slide ruler, and
the first calculators were 3 inches wide, 5 inches long and an inch
thick, and all it did was the four math functions plus figure
percentages. Now they have tasked me with the website. Thank goodness
for a good webmaster!
Our web page used to be and still is, a division of the web site for the
City of St. George. But we now have a domain name (whatever that is)
that takes us directly to the police department section of the city’s
web page. If you want to visit it, go to “stgeorgepolice.com”.
Many have asked us to start a neighborhood watch in their area of town.
Go to the web site and there are instructions on how to begin a
neighborhood watch program. Call the police department when you want
training on any of the topics such as safety, how to report suspicious
incidents, etc. We have about 10 active neighborhood watches in Dixie
Downs, Green Valley, Stone Cliff, Sun River and the area east of the
Black Ridge.
Many calls come in to the department wanting to know how to contact a
certain officer. Go to the web page and the employee directory and you
can find the e-mail address of every officer. E-mail them with your
message or request. If you do not find the officer in the directory, use
the first initial of the first name and 7 letters of the last name of
the officer along with the root address “@sgpdm.state.ut.us” and the
message will get to him or her. Many of the officers work shifts other
than day shift, so e-mail is the best way to contact them.
I recently got a call from a father who was concerned about the safety
of his child at school. Go to the web page and you can find a list of
the special units and divisions and you will see that we have school
resource officers in each of the high and middle schools. We also have
an instructor level bomb squad and Haz-Mat team.
If you would like to find out what the law says on a specific topic, or
if you want to find out why your son got a ticket for altered vehicle,
go to the web page and click on “find a law.” There you can find the
wording in any law in the Utah code book or any of our city ordinances.
We will be adding a section so that you can do a report from our web
page for minor events that do not have any solvability factors such as
witnesses, suspects or evidence but a report is still needed for
insurance or documentation purposes. We will have a map of St. George as
it is divided into areas along with the crime statistics in each of
these areas for you to see what is going on and where it is happening.
If you have ideas or topics that you would like to see on the web page,
e-mail me. Our web page will be under construction with new additions
and modifications from time to time. Not by ME, of course! I’ll stay
with what I know. Honey, I need some more type paper! And tell me what
“FATAL ERROR” means!
