Jewelry Making Program
Chain Making Classes- Mondays, April 22- May 20 @ Noon-3:00 pm
Learn how to make bracelets or beautiful chains for your jewelry. This class has no soldering and is for all levels. It does not require any prior jewelry making experience. We will start with how to make your jumprings in large batches safely and quickly. Then we will make a few basic chains before moving into varieties of chain mail. This is a techniques class. Students will leave with samples they made of each chain in copper.
Beginning Jewelry Making Class- Mondays, March 4-April 15 @ Noon-3:00 pm
This is a class for the absolute beginner, or for someone who hasn’t done this in a while and would like a refresher course on soldering with silver. We will cut, shape and make a bezel to fit a stone. We will then solder that down with some embellishments. We will make a bail and polish the piece. We will finish by setting the stone. Instructor will introduce several pieces of equipment in the jewelry studio including the torch, and the safe use of them. This is a project based class and students will leave with a pendant made of silver with a cabochon stone set on it. Stone selection will be different than shown on the sample.
Tube Setting Workshop- Thursday, March 14 @ 9am-4pm
Learn a quick and easy way to set round faceted stones. Students will solder a few pieces of tubing down on a base plate. We will then use burs to cut a seat for the stones at the correct height, and then set the stones. The class will be working with copper tubing on a brass plate, although the same techniques apply to silver. This is a techniques oriented class. Beginning Jewelry class, or knowing how to solder and set a cabochon is recommended.
Rivet Making Workshop- Tuesday, March 12 @ 9am-4pm
If you can drill a hole in it, you can connect it. Learn how to attach things without solder or glue. We will go through three types of rivets- wire, tubing, and using tiny brass screws. This is a techniques class. Students will learn riveting by putting two sheets of brass together, but the technique applies to endless materials. This is for all levels.

Description:
Orange ball clinic will be played on a 60’ court and 50% compression orange balls to help players improve their tennis game. Tennis rackets and court size are scaled down to the size of the youth players, allowing them to use proper technique. Orange Ball clinic stays within the parameters of the USTA 10 n Under national program.
Level Descriptions:
8:30am to 9:30am / Level 1 - For beginner players with little or no tennis experience. Players in level 1 will learn the forehand and backhand groundstroke, parts of the court, court etiquette and scoring. See class syllabus on back.
8:30am to 9:30am / Level 2 - Players with some tennis experience who can demonstrate proper strokes at times. Players will continue to development forehand and backhand groundstrokes putting them on course for Team Orange.
8:30am to 10:00am / Team Orange - Players who have achieved a level of ability that can handle full speed and court of Orange Balls and 60’ court. Players will continue to work on their forehand and backhand groundstrokes. Players will be introduced to the serve, volley and match play. Players are on course for Jr. Development Green Dot Balls. (Team Orange is invitation only. Time is from 4:30pm to 6:00pm allowing for match play, see back for package details)

Safe St. George
St. George has grown rapidly over the past 10 years, and according to the US Census, St. George was the fastest-growing city in the nation between July 2020 to July 2021. Current growth projections anticipate the City will continue to experience significant growth over the coming years.
That type of growth brings challenges.
Safe St. George is a 5-year plan intended to help meet those challenges, providing for long-term investment in personnel, facilities and equipment essential to the City’s Public Safety services: St. George Police Department, St. George Fire Department and 911 Dispatch.
Current reliable revenue sources have not kept pace with the growing demands of our community. The City’s volume of emergency calls is climbing fast. Outside agencies are increasing public safety wages, making it challenging to retain our skilled personnel.
Funding for Safe St. George is centered around property tax increases which are necessary for the 5-year plan to be successful and sustainable.
“Public Safety is a top priority of the city — it always has been,” said Mayor Michele Randall. “Property tax revenues help the City of St. George fund services to our community — and St. George hasn’t raised its portion of property taxes in 35 years. This is an opportunity for us to catch up to the growth we have experienced and continue to fund these vital services at a high level.”
Safe St. George seeks to accomplish several objectives:
Add 104 new positions to the City’s public safety departments.
Improve public safety compensation, allowing the City to be competitive with police officer and firefighter wages, thereby helping the City to retain and recruit a highly qualified workforce critical to our community.
Fund four fire stations and approximately 158 vehicles (police vehicles and fire apparatus) necessary to support our public safety services.
The Safe St. George 5-year plan will cost an estimated $89.8 million. The City has identified several other sources to help pay for a substantial portion (74 percent) of the Safe St. George 5-year plan, lessening the impact to our citizens. These funding sources include:

The St. George City Police Department is hosting their 3rd Annual 10k, 5k, and 1k! This is a Cops and Robbers themed event. When you register you can choose to be Team Cop or Team Robber. The Robbers team will be given a head start before the Cops chase after them. This is a timed race and your time will start once you cross the start line no matter what team you choose. Each team will be given a unique shirt and custom swag item depending on if you choose Team Cop or Team Robber.

Net Metering Agreement – this document is an agreement with the customer and the city regarding the responsibilities of each party with regard to the solar PV system operation. This document requires a customer’s notarized signature. The Net Metering Agreement can be submitted to the Energy Services Department (811 E Red Hills Parkway) at any time during the application review process. However, it must be submitted before the system will be approved to go on line.
Net Metering Appendix – this document details the fees related to the program and the calculation of the monthly solar reliability charge and the annual buy back of any excess energy the customer generated. This is an informational document.
Common questions related to the Net Metering Program
If you are considering installing solar PV on your home or business, there are several questions to ask in order to make an informed decision.
What is roof top solar?
Roof top solar typically refers to solar Photovoltaic (PV) system installed on a roof which generates energy from the sun to power a person’s home or business.
What terms do I need to understand about solar PV systems?
Behind the customer meter: The system is located so that any generated electricity flows first the customer, if the customer needs more energy than the solar PV is generating, St. George delivers the energy to you from the electrical grid. For example, if your home uses 100 kWh a day and your system produces 80 kWh per day, you will receive 20 kWh a day from the electrical grid.
kW: Kilowatt – is equal to 1,000 watts. A solar PV system capacity is measured in kW. For example a 3 kW system would have the ability to produce 3 kW of demand (which is the maximum of energy output at a moment in time).
kWh – kilowatt hour – is a measurement of energy, it is a kW multiplied by the time in hours. For instance 2 kW for 1 hour is 2 kWh. Customers are billed based on how many kWh consumed in a billing cycle. For example if you have a 3 kW system (shown above) and it generated 3 kW for 1 hour, it would produce 3 kWh of energy. It is estimated that a 3 kW system in St. George has the potential of generating 5,193 kWh in a 12 month period. The energy produced would go first to your home and then if any more energy is needed, St. George would deliver energy to you from the electrical grid.
How much will a solar PV system cost? Solar PV system costs can vary depending on many factors such as the size or capacity of the system. Some questions to ask may be:
How large of a system do I need?
This question addresses what is termed “name plate capacity” of a solar PV system and is expressed in kilowatts (kW). The capacity of the system will tell you how much energy the system will generate. For example a 3 kW system is expected to generate 5,193 kWh in a year.
PV Watts Calculator is a website that can provide an estimate of how many kWh’s you will save based on the system size. The website is http://pvwatts.nrel.gov/
How can I find my utility information?
Contact the St. George City at 435-627-4700 to request a copy of your energy use history.
Will the system be installed on the roof of my home, roof of an unattached garage or on the ground?
That is a question for your installer to answer. You should check with the City Building Department to determine the requirements. 435-627-4000
Will the system include a battery bank to provide back-up power in the event of a utility power disruption?
That is a question for your installer to answer.
What are the fees and when do I have to pay them?
The fees and how they are calculated are listed in the Net Metering Appendix which found in the Resources section of the Net Metering page on the City’s website. www.sgcity.org
Can I install a solar PV system on my house?
Yes a homeowner can install solar on the house they are residing in. A homeowner cannot install solar on income property. A licensed electrician will be required to handle the interconnection with the utility. An individual installing a system on their owner/occupied home will need to follow the net metering program requirements.
How do I find a solar contractor?
St. George requires all solar contractors to have a City business license and to have completed the pre-qualified solar contractor class. For a list of contractors that have met this requirement please contact 435-627-4095
It is recommended that you obtain more than one bid as part of the decision making process.
Once I’ve decided on a contractor or am ready to install the system myself, what is the next step?
Complete the Net Metering Application which can be obtained via the City Inspect webportal. Contact The Building Department with questions related to the City Inspect webportal.
Once the application is submitted how long is the process.

What can I expect on my utility bill after the solar PV is installed?
The customer charge will still be billed.
Two meters will be listed on the Electric portion of your utility bill. One is the bi-directional meter. If the kWh charge will read zero if you did not need any energy from the utility. If you required energy from the utility, there will be a KWH charge.
The other line under the Electric section on your bill is the reading from the production meter. It is the kWh’s your system produced in the billing period.
The line item for “SOLAR REL CG” is the Solar Reliability Charge.
This charge is based on the kWh's your system produced in the billing period.
When do I get paid for excess energy my solar PV system generated?
For example in March I produced more energy than I needed. What happened to my excess energy?
Your excess energy was delivered to St. George grid and a calculation for a credit of kWh was put to your bill for the next month. Let look at the charge below for example.

This is Southern Utah's longest running half marathon. This spectacular race is on paved city trails that wind along the Virgin River and take you through the beautiful landscape of St. George.
Virgin River Half Marathon Expo & Packet Pick up: Friday, January 10th 2025 from 2 pm- 7 pm at the Dixie Convention Center. (1835 S Convention Center Dr, St George, UT 84790)
If you cannot pickup your packet on Friday, you must inform us prior to the Expo to ensure you receive your bib. There will be no bib assignments the morning of the race.
Start Line Location: Dixie Convention Center (1835 S Convention Center Dr., St George, UT 84790)
Aid Station Information: Aid stations will be located at approximately miles 2.2, 4.9, 6.4, 8.6, 10.9, and one will be at the turnaround for the 5K. Water and Gatorade will be available at each aid station and power gel will be available at aid stations 4.9 and 8.6.
Award and Medals: Awards will be 3 persons deep in each 5-year age category for the Half Marathon and each 10-year age category for both Men and Women in the 10k, and 5K. All participants who finish will receive a finisher medal.
Time Limits: Please be aware that all athletes must finish the race in 3 hours and 30 minutes- roughly a 16-minute mile. Athletes who have not finished by this time will be allowed to stay on the course but will not have course support, the clock will be stopped and taken down, and those over 3.5 hours will receive and DNF (did not finish) in the official results.

Jr. Development clinics utilize a 75% compressed green dot ball and a 78’ court (full size court) to help players between the ages of 10 and 13 and staying within the parameters of the USTA (United States Tennis Association).
Skill level and Syllabus Descriptions
Beginner Level - For beginner players with little or no tennis experience.
Syllabus for Beginner level players:
Week One: Introduction to forehand ground strokes, grip, and spin. Intro to parts of the court and racket.
Week Two: Introduction to backhand ground strokes, grip and spin.
Week Three: Review of forehand and backhand ground stroke, grip and spin. Introduction to scoring.
Week Four: Review of forehand and backhand ground stroke, grip and spin. Review of scoring and intro to match play

Intermediate Level - Players with some tennis experience who can demonstrate proper strokes at times.
Prerequisite for intermediate level: Knowledge of scoring, ground stroke grips, parts of the court and the forehand and backhand ground stroke components. Players must have a fundamental swing using topspin, and be consistent with getting balls into play using drop feeds and toss feeds.

In the first two weeks of class, coaches will pass out t-shirts to the kids. After the 2nd week we hope to have all shirts handed out to each athlete.
Please make sure to bring plenty of water for yourself and your children. There's a very good chance that these mornings will be warm.
Sunscreen and protective hats and/or sunglasses can also be very important and valuable.

How to Book a Field Trip
Any educator may visit our website at https://www.sgcity.org/triprequest/ to book a field trip day for his/her classroom. Group pricing is $25 for groups of 49 people and less and $50 for groups of 50 or more. A two (2) week notice is greatly appreciated due to calendaring issues. However, please note when viewing the on-line calendar there are black-out dates. When requesting your field trip, please select your preferred topics, the number of attendees along with the day and time you prefer. Once your field trip request has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation or denial of your request.
Field Trip Set-Up
In most cases, a large group is divided into smaller groups of 25 or less to accommodate the stations. An average school group of 100 is typically divided into 4 sub-groups of 25 students. Each sub-group then would rotate throughout 4 stations lasting approximately 20 minutes at each station.
Smaller groups will be divided into less stations.
Making the Most of Your Field Trip
A field trip is an opportunity for students to link their classroom learning, knowledge and understanding of a subject with outside experiences. These extension activities make learning more relevant and memorable. Your students will get more out of the experience if you build what they learned into your curriculum. An ideal field trip begins with in-class lessons and experiments to prepare students for what they will experience in the field. Post field trip activities will further enhance the learning, knowledge, and understanding gained during the environmental experience.
On our website, www.sgcityrec.org/tnc you will find the list of programs available. Please refer to this website to prepare your students in advance.
Teacher Responsibilities:
Please have your groups ready at the drop off point, with name tags visible, at Tonaquint Park’s main parking lot at the proper time.
Prepare your students by reviewing program vocabulary.
Let the students know ahead of time what to expect in their program.
Explain the behavioral expectations.
Encourage the students to listen to the presentations, keep their voices down and come willing to learn something new.
Please maintain a “don’t touch” policy for the students unless the environmental educator has suggested it.
Student Responsibilities:
Follow the environmental educator’s instructions at all times.
Stay with the group and on the paths at all times.
Wear clothes that are comfortable and adequate for any weather changes.
Please maintain a “don’t touch” policy unless the environmental educator has suggested it.
Ask questions.
Respect the environment. We are visitors in the home of others.
Chaperone Responsibilities:
Know where the members of your group are at all times.
Resolve any discipline issues.
Assist participants who have an emergency.
Make sure all members of the group follow staff rules.
Participate in and show interest in the programs.
Model proper behavior.
Leave siblings or other children at home.
Please turn off cell phones.
Preparing For Your Field Trip
Arrival:
Please arrive on time. Delays may force cancellation or shortening of some programs. Buses should drop students off at the designated parking area near The Conservation Garden. Please assemble students in the pavilion next to the parking lot. Your students will be greeted by one of our educational staff. **Smaller groups will meet at the Tonaquint Nature Center.
Cell Phones:
While we recognize the importance of cell phones on-site, we request that all cell phones be silenced during program presentations and that all chaperones refrain from taking calls during the field trip.
Discipline:
The environmental educator is not responsible for discipline. Teacher and chaperone involvement is vital to a meaningful learning experience and student safety.
Dismissal:
Please have buses pick up students at the park’s main parking lot. After turning onto the park’s main entrance, follow the road until you see the parking lot next to the tennis courts. There is enough room for the bus to turn around. If your bus is going to wait, please ask the driver to turn off the bus. Bus emissions are harmful for the environment and students at the park.
Dress:
Students and chaperones must wear close-toed shoes. Long pants and long sleeves are preferred, even in warm weather. Dress appropriately for cooler weather as most activities are in the shaded tree areas. Failure to comply may result in participant exclusion.
Grouping:
Instructional groups of no more than 25 should be divided in advance; preferring prior to arrival. The adult to student ratio should be no less than 1:10.
Inclimate Weather:
The program will be cancelled in the case of heavy rain, and/or severe wind. Notification will be called into the school by 7:30- 8:00 on the morning of the trips. If class needs to be rescheduled, we will discuss potential dates with the teachers. Teachers may call Hannah Keller at (435)627-4564 with any questions.
Insect Repellent/Sunscreen:
You will be outside for the duration of your field trip. Spraying with insect repellent and/or sunscreen before your trip is recommended.
Lunch:
Groups have the option of using one of the picnic pavilions at the park. Cleaning up leftover lunch trash is an important part of the day. We encourage Earth friendly packing of lunch, with as little waste as possible. Trash cans are located in the area.
Name Tags:
All participants, students and chaperones, must wear a visible name tag.
