Gloria Shakespeare moved to St. George in 1957 from Panguitch, Utah when her parents John & Beth Hurst moved their store “Hurst Variety” to St. George. The stores new location in St. George was across from the St. George Tabernacle on 1st north main. Gloria worked in that downtown store and learned about business from her mother who she worked with. She graduated from Dixie High School & Dixie College and in 1968 she married Tom Shakespeare and they are the parents of 9 children, five daughters and four sons. In 1984 she and her husband started their own business “Tom’s Mechanical”, a local plumbing company here in this area. Gloria started the Neighborhood Enhancement Committee (7 years and running) out of concern for what was taking place in the downtown neighborhoods. This committee has been instrumental in rezoning of the downtown, a city wide rental ordinance and a nuisance enforcement program which empowers the city to enforce its own ordinances. When ask “Why she decided to run for office?” she replied “ It felt like the right thing to do at this time. I hope to make a difference for good in the lives of the people I serve”.
