Suzanne B. Allen was first elected to the City Council in November, 1997 after serving as a member of the Planning Commission. After being elected, Suzanne continued to serve as the council liaison on the Planning Commission for several years, as well as the Board of Adjustment. Other board assignments included Pioneer Center for the Arts, the St. George Arts Commission, the DinosaurAH!torium Foundation board, Dixie Care and Share, Healthy Dixie, the Dixie Area Workforce Housing Affordability Committee (DAWHAC), the St. George Chamber of Commerce, and was also elected as a board member on the Utah League of Cities and Towns. Current assignments are with the St. George Housing Authority, Public Works department, golf department, Washington County Economic Development Council, the Washington County Solid Waste Board and the Dixie Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), which Suzanne has chaired since it's inception in 2001. In this capacity she sits as a member on the Joint Policy Advisory Committee (JPAC) in SLC, which board includes members all four MPO's in the state, UDOT and Utah Transit Authority.
Suzanne has been an active member of the community since moving to St. George in 1986. The mother of six children, she has served on many PTA boards and three terms as PTA President. She was a founding board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters in St. George. She is a graduate of Leadership Dixie and served on the Board of Directors. She served as a member on the St. George Musical Theater board. Suzanne was appointed to the first St. George Transportation Planning Committee and has been active in transportation issues since her election to the council.
Today Suzanne's community service, outside of her council assignments, include serving in a volunteer capacity as chairman of the Dixie Regional Medical Center Governing Board, the Foundation of Dixie Regional Medical Center, the Leadership Academy board of directors and the Governor's Commission on Aging. Active in her church, Suzanne has served in numerous leadership and teaching positions.
Continued focus on sustainable planning for our city's future is still a priority to Suzanne. While the growth rate has dramatically decreased, she believes that this area will continue to steadily grow as the economy begins to recover. Continued efforts must be made to address the needs for infrastructure, commercial & industrial development, expansion and diversification of the city's energy portfolio. Great strides have been made with the ongoing efforts of education encouraging conservation of our water and power resources, and as new challenges arise, her experience and dedication to preserving St. George's quality of life and sustainability will continue to benefit the citizens of St. George.
Suzanne was raised in Idaho Falls and moved to Utah in 1968, where she graduated from Orem High and then attended Brigham Young University. A former ski instructor, Suzanne owned and operated her own business before moving to St. George. She and her husband Paul are the owners of Allen Electric and partners in Advanced Sound and Performance. They are the parents of six, and the grandparents of sixteen.
