Larry Gardner was appointed to the City Council in 1994 to fill the remainder
of the term of Daniel D. McArthur when he was elected Mayor. In November
1995 he was elected to a full, four year term on the Council. He is Council
Representative to the Water and Power Board and Shade Tree Board.
Larry brings to the City years of experience in education, ranching, and
private business. He has taught seminary for the LDS Church Education System
21 years and worked since a young boy on his family's ranching business
in Pine Valley and the Arizona Strip. Along with his father and brother
he also runs a family business in St. George.
He has successfully worked with families in the community to acquire land
for parks and open spaces through purchases and donations. He is a strong
advocate of preserving the agricultural areas and green space. He is a firm
believer in private property rights and feels that with adequate dialogue
and compromise, community rights can also be protected.
Larry has served as president of the Pine Valley Irrigation Company, secretary
of the Pine Valley Stock Association, a member of the Washington County
Farm Bureau Board of Directors and chairman of the Dixie Land Coalition.
He has served as President of the Dixie College Stake of the LDS Church.
Because of the many public-private issues surrounding St. George's rapid
growth Larry's work with the Bureau of Land Management is invaluable to
the Council and community. He has served as Council Representative for the
Board of Adjustments, the police and fire departments. He holds Bachelors
and Masters degrees in education from Brigham Young University.
Larry is a native of St. George and Pine Valley, Utah. His wife, the former
Carol Ann Barton, is a homemaker. They have four daughters and two sons.
Council Member Gardner's current term expires December 31, 2007. |
