- Ron Garner was born in 1931 in Ephraim, Utah.
|
|

- Ron received his BS ’53 and MS ’55 from the University of Utah and
Doctorate ’63 from the University of Oregon.
|

- Ron arrived in St. George in the fall of 1955. At the age of 24 years
old he came to Dixie College to teach music.
|

- Ron started the first
- Dixie College marching band.
|
|

- Ron played bass in a jazz trio with guest Rafael Méndez
|

- With the intent of ending up in Santa Rosa, California, Ron took the
job at Dixie only for a short time. Each year he said he would stay just
one more year to see what happened.

- We are glad he decided to stick around and raise his 6 children here.
His daughter Randi Hunt is now following in her dad’s foot steps and
runs the Dixie Downs Elementary Music Program.

- Ron brought with him a musical vision for our community. He founded the Southwest Symphony
Orchestra along with Irene Everett and Norman Fawson.

- He organized the Celebrity Concert Series in 1958 which presented 6
concerts a year with a membership of 200 people. It has now grown to present 11-12
concerts per season to a membership of over 1300 people in our community.

- Ron Garner has educated thousands of music students during his 54 years
of teaching at Dixie College
|

- Under his tutelage, thousands of students have gained an appreciation
for music through performance, class instruction and mentorship. Many have followed in his footsteps
and are now music teachers.

- Running, including 14 marathons, was one way to relieve the stress of
teaching for 54 years.

- He is the longest-serving tenured professor in the Utah State System of
Higher Education.

- In 2005, Dr. Ron Garner was inducted into the Dixie State College Hall
of Fame honoring him for his outstanding service to music education, and
in particular, Dixie State College.

- Ron has made a significant impact on the culture and artistic beauty of
our community.

- Dr. Garner says “It has been exciting to be a part of the growth of the
arts in St. George.”
