Formed as part of the 1996 Utah Statehood Centennial celebration, the Legacy Collection comprises 12 paintings by respected local artists. The goal was to promote the visual arts in Utah's Dixie and provide the St. George Art Museum with significant works reflecting the colorful history of the area. Inspiration for the project is attributed to artist Farrell R. Collett, who for many years advocated the need for a collection of historical paintings.

In addition to the paintings, the Legacy Collection contains photographs by Gene Butera of all the contributing artists.
