Visionscapes: The Vanishing Rock Art Sites of the West by Diane Orr
Show available:
October 28, 2006 through
December 27, 2006
This exhibit features panoramic photographs of major rock art sites of the West including Desert Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Barrier Canyon Style, Chihuahuan Polychrome, Abstract, Basketmaker II, Early Historic Ute and Historic Navaho rock art styles. Each photograph is accompanied by a one-page description of the cultural group represented by the style and particular preservation concerns.
Diane Orr is an award winning documentary filmmaker and photographer who has been filming and photographing the people, issues, and wide spaces of the West for over 30 years. Her recent work, 360-degree photographs of western rock art sites, is inspired by the beauty and on-going destruction of a significant cultural heritage.
In June of 2006, Orr received the Oliver Award for Best Photography from the American Rock Art Research Association. Orr’s Rock Art photographs have been in view in venues in northern Utah and California. Orr has directed, written, and edited over thirty documentaries for broadcast television, including her nonfiction feature, Lost Forever Everett Ruess that premiered in 2000 at the Taos Talking Pictures Film Festival.
On October 28 at 1pm, Diane Orr will give an Art Conversation at the St. George Art Museum that is open and free to the public.
The theme for First Night (12/30) at the St. George Art Museum features Orr’s work and is Rock Out with Rock Art. The evening event from 7-11pm will include activities and art for all ages.
