Batiks & Stitches: Fabric Art By Anne Muñoz
Show available:
January 14, 2006 through
March 25, 2006
Award winning fabric artist, Anne Muñoz, will be on view at the St. George Art Museum from January 14 through March 25, 2006. Batik is the basis for her work that then is sometimes painted and quilted. Batik or wax painting is an ancient art form thought to have originated in India over 3,000 years ago. While Muñoz has been exhibiting for twenty years, she is still excited by the medium of batik and the surprise nature of the result. The resulting art is inspired by the natural world of turtles, lizards, fish, sunsets, buttes, water, and trees, however sometimes the forms are abstracted and sometimes naturalistic, though from unusual perspectives. In addition to her work with fabrics, Muñoz has also worked in graphic design for years, as well as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography. Batik, she explains, can be a very limiting medium unless you love and revel in it which she clearly does. Muñoz says that while she plans each piece in detail, another part emerges when I turn off that left part of my brain. As she describes the process, it’s like being on creative cruise control. She emphasizes that a successful piece is one you never tire of looking at. A 3rd Thursday Conversation on February 16th at 7pm will feature Anne Muñoz. She will speak about her process and her art. Join us for the exhibit and for the conversation. All 3rd Thursdays are Museum free days with extended hours from 10am to 9pm. The Conversations are also free.
