Youth Bouldering Ages 8+

Our Youth Bouldering Programs are designed with a focus on teaching and coaching while providing challenges that fit each climber and their ability level.  The multiple class levels allow entry-level climbers to progress through the different levels as they gain different skills and increase their confidence in climbing, while experienced climbers can enjoy the challenges of our level 2 and 3 classes. SGO's staff have years of experience both climbing and teaching with ample amounts of passion for what they do!

Yes. In order to participate in the program you are required to sign an Adult Waiver or Youth Informed Consent Form. You will also need to fill out the online medical form.

Yes.  At times classes will be cancelled because of poor weather or bad trail conditions.  If this is the case, our instructors will reach out to you letting you know that there will be no class.  All missed classes will be result in a credit to your rec center account for the cost of the missed class. This credit can be used at a future date to sign up for any of our other programs run by the St. George Recreation Department.
Are there age restrictions for the bouldering class?
Yes. This class is open for youth ages 8-17 years old.
Are there requirements for proper attire?
Non-constrictive active wear/clothing. All of our classes meet outside, so please dress for the weather.
What is a Crash Pad?
A crash pad is a large pad used for somone who is bouldering to fall onto.  The pads are often 6-8 inches thick and are made up of both closed and open celled foam.  While climbing these pads are laid on the ground under the boulder problem or route to provide a safe landing for climbers. These pads can provide safety for falls up to 20 ft.  Our climbers will never climb with the top of their head being more than 10 feet off the ground. This results in falls that are only a few feet in height with 6+ pads below them and the other climbers and instructors spotting them.
How does the free / discounted lunch discount work for SGO's classes?
SGO provides a discount for students that recieve either free or discounted school lunches with the Washington County School District.  The discount allows the first child you register for classes that month to recieve a 50% discount off the class cost.  Any additional children you register that month will be charged the full cost of the course.  When you register for the class course at the Rec Center you will need to provide documention proving you recieve either free or discounted lunches.  You will need to bring a copy of the document that is provided by Washing County School Distict.
Is there a withdrawal / transfer policy?
Withdrawal/Transfer less than 7 days prior to the start date may be subject to a fee. No refunds on or after that date.
My child has never climbed before. Can they still participate?
Yes! Our instructors are excellent coaches. They will select different climbing locations and routes based on the abilities of the climbers in the class. If your child shows a high level of proficencythe instructors may do an assessment for them and suggest they be moved to a higher level class.
What does the fee include?
Climbing shoes, crash-pads, chalk, instruction, and transportation.
What if my child has behavioral issues during class?

SGO will do our best to work with our students to meet their needs. This will occasionally result in situations where the behavioral needs of a student exceed what we are capable of offering.  These situations often result in increased and unnecessary safety risks, a level of supervision we cannot provide, and a dramatic shift in the ability to run our programs.  If the behavioral issues are minor our staff will work directly with the student to identify the boundaries and expectations to participate, while clearly laying out the consequences for not doing so.  If these issues continue we will reach out to the family letting them know of the situation and outlining what needs to change for the student to remain in our program.  Failure to meet the discussed boundaries will result in immediate removal from the program.  This could range from the child being able to finish the class that day and then not being able to return in the future, up to the parent needing to immediately come and pick them up from our location during class.

In the case of behaviors or actions that are an immediate safety risk to themselves or other students, your child will be immediately removed from the program and will be unable to participate in the future.  Removal from a program because of behavioral issues will not result in a refund or credit to your rec center account.

What is Bouldering? How is it different from roped climbing?
Bouldering is rock climbing.  The difference is the height that is climbed and the protective gear used.  In roped climbing, climbers utilize harnesses, belay devices, anchor systems, and ropes to provide safety while climbing.  These pieces of gear are needed due to the height of the routes. At SGO, we do not do roped climbing and instead boulder.  Bouldering allows climbers to do hard moves, known as the crux of the route, while only being a few feet off the ground.  Significantly decreasing the height off the ground significantly decreases the risk associated.  Bouldering utilizes crash pads and spotters to provide a safe zone for climbers to fall a few feet if they are unable to finish a climb. At SGO, we have a policy that the top of a climber's head may never be more than 10 feet off the ground.  This industry standard helps to keep all falls to only a few feet even though the safety systems we use can provide safety up to 25 feet. If you have further questions, do not hesitate to reach out to the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor, Mike.  He would be glad to answer any questions you have. He can be reached at 435-627-4579.
What is SGO's refund / cancelation policy?
Full refunds are available to those who cancel their registration 7 days before the start of the class.  If you cancel within 7 days of the class your rec center account will be credited for the cost of the class and can be used for future programs. In the event class is cancelled due to weather we will issue a credit for the missed class to your rec center account.
What should we bring to class?
Appropriate clothing for all weather conditions including a rain jacket, small backpack, 2 liters of water, and a snack. All emergency supplies, such as an inhaler should also be brought and instructors should be informed.
Where do we meet for each class?
Each class will start and end at the Rec Center. For the first class of each session, please plan on showing up 15 minutes early.
Why are some months classes 4 weeks, while others are 3 weeks?
We do our best to work with the school schedule to make sure we avoid scheduling classes during large periods of time off. We want our families to have the option to still sign up for our courses and not miss out on a chance to travel or have their child miss a class because of travel. During the months that our courses are 3 weeks instead 4, we have adjusted the price.
